The Rise of Demi-Couture

This is an article from vogue.co.uk. Quite honestly, I only learned the word "demi-couture" after being obsessed with Mary Kartantzou. Basically, a lot of fashion journals and bloggers term her works as "demi-couture" or "ready-to-wear couture."

SALES of highly-priced, highly-decorative items created by ready-to-wear designers have increased exponentially over the past two seasons, but what is the reason behind it?
"I think there is great demand from women to buy something unique that is made with great craftmanship," Mary Kartantzou told us. "They buy into something that is collectable and that they can keep for years to come instead of buying into dispensable fashion. It has changed the way we build a collection. When I started out I thought these pieces would just be for show and would be great for press but now they have become the backbone to the collection, and we always create a commercial counterpart that buyers buy in greater volume. I think it's a new way of buying into a couture-like garment without having the level of bespoke that couture offers, but still buying into a piece that is made with great attention to detail and that is really special."
"Pieces over $5,000 now account for 6 per cent of our business," Matthew Williamson president Joseph Velosa said. "To put that into context, two years ago we sold nothing at that price."

London-based designer Katrantzou has sold 18 units of her decorative and embellished Jewel Tree Dress, priced at £8,300, the Wall Street Journal reports today - meaning that the popularity of so-called "demi-couture" extends beyond the usual names ( Chanel, McQueen, Valentino) to young designers - but what is driving the consumer trend in what we are told is our bleakest financial hour?
"The customers who have the time to fly to Paris to sit through shows, lunch at Maxim's and visit designer ateliers for multiple fittings are few and far between these days," the Wall Street Journal argues. "In contrast, pieces like Mary Katrantzou's Jewel Tree Dress or Stella McCartney's damask lace and organza Pamela Dress [also priced at just under £8,000] don't require fittings - they can be bought with a few clicks at NET-A-PORTER.COM and delivered to your door the next day."

London-based ecommerce site CoutureLab was established in 2006 by one of the founders of Net-A-Porter, Carmen Busquets ,  to offer exactly that: "seasonless" couture in a click. Designers including Alexis Mabille, Haider Ackermann, Nina Ricci, and Roberta Furlanetto already sell couture-quality pieces from the site, although - unlike traditional couture - each piece is conventionally sized rather than individually fitted.
Azzedine Alaïa's catwalk return in July with what he termed "semi-couture"; Karl Lagerfeld's pre-autumn/winter 2011-12 Chanel Metier D'Arts collection, utilising the skills of the couture atelier; as well as lush, ornate collections by designers including Christopher Kane, Prabal Gurung, Jason Wu, Rodarte and Proenza Schouler for autumn/winter, suggest the trend is far from over - and couture at the click of a mouse may be the next step.

TRUE KOREA

FOR ALL FILIPINOS INTERESTED IN TRAVELING TO SOUTH KOREA, HERE ARE SOME OF MY TIPS. BELIEVE ME, I'VE BEEN THERE

1. If you've never experienced winter, suit yourself. It's cold! Like really cold. Buy thermal wear. My thermal wear lasted a week. You won't perspire so carry on. :))
2. Buy great boots. Yes boots. and make sure that the sole is rubber and has those dents and spaces like combat boots. Mine is flat so basically I slipped wherever I go. :))
3. The people are kind. Very.... :)
4. Some sellers are aggressive. Yes, you just ask a price and they think you will buy it. :O
5. Taxis start at 2300 won and additional 100 won every (drop of meter?)
6. I did not take a bus but there are numbers in the buses which has different routes so be careful.
7. SHOP TIL YOU DROP. It's cheaper than in the Philippines, especially cosmetics! woohoo!
8. There are no security guards. One of the hassles in shopping in the Phils are the inspection of bags. There is none in Korea as they are very honest. Very true actually.
9. Bring a shopping bag. Those 25 peso-bags in Office Warehouse and 35-peso bags in SM Supermarket are a great investment when going to Korea. They don't have plastic bags. You buy them. But in the supermarkets, if you bought a lot, you can transfer them in boxes and the boxes are free. :)
10. Bring lots of money!!! For shopping.
11. The food is delicious and they serve a lot. Yes they do. Also, they have spicy tastes so be careful :) There are only a few Starbucks. They patronize their own products so go for Cafe Bene or Vero Espresso ( I think that's the name).
12. Know basic Korean words. If you don't understand them say, "Molayo Korean" Molayo means I don't know. And Kamsamnida means "Thank you." :)

In defense of Madonna

I love Madonna ok?
So, there let's get things straight.
I don't get why people are so angry that she's 53 years old and still singing and all that. Why?
WHY? When you turn 53, you'll stop working? Of course you won't and so will her.

Her career is based on sex. It was only in the early 90's people. After that, she went to "Bedtime Stories" then probably the best pop album ever, "Ray of Light" IT WAS FOR PUBLICITY. What? The other popstars didn't do it. LET'S FACE IT, SEX SELLS.

SHE'S OLD AND UNTALENTED. But there are still fans that love her. That's what gets her going. Money is always in there no matter what you do. Nothing's for free you know. You download free music but to do that you need internet and electricity which you pay. so there, we're slaves to money.

SHE'S IRRELEVANT NOW. The reason she gets less airplay is the "Madonna ban" on 2003. When George W. Bush proclaimed that she was "anti-American" but Madonna was "anti-war." Madonna does not support "THE FACT THAT AMERICA AND IRAQ ARE FIGHTING AND INNOCENT PEOPLE ARE KILLED." Radio stations were banned to play Madonna songs and I don't know why but until now they do it. SO STUPID.

SHE HAS KIDS, STOP IT. She has tamed it down didn't she. Yes, those outfits in Sticky and Sweet tour were a tad bit... revealing but so what? It was for fashion. As for the kids, yes, there might be some trauma involved but I think with Madonna's overprotectiveness they'll be fine. She doesn't adopt for attention. People should not be blinded by hate for someone when that person is doing something good. I'd rather you'd ignore her than say hateful words. You're just wasting time and effort.

So there. I know I might get haters here but I hope you'll understand. I'm sure you have those artist you will defend til the end. :)))

BUT I THINK MADONNA'S 12TH ALBUM TITLED "MDNA" IS AMAZING! IT'S AN OMG MOMENT! HAHAHA. LUV LUV LUV IT!

She loves her name being sung now. e.g. CandyShop, 4 Minutes, Gimme All Your Luvin'. Go Go Go Madonna! I support you! :)
